Aerobic Water Exercise

During the hot days of summer, embarking on a water aerobics régime may be a way to supplant part of a regular exercise schedule. Water aerobics or aqua exercise, as it is sometimes known, has cardiovascular, strength building, and conditioning benefits. For people concerned about weight, it’s a great way to burn calories. Also, for individuals or athletes who have suffered an injury, it may provide a way to continue exercising without risking re-injury.

Water Aerobic Equipment

One of the many pluses of water aerobics is that the amount of equipment is minimal (and it’s light as well). Starting out, of course, is a good swimsuit or two. Depending upon the commitment to the sport and the number of times one plans on engaging in this form of fitness, better quality swimwear will last longer and look better too.

Additional equipment needs include foam dumbbells, ankle weights, noodles (see picture), a pair of water shoes and/or athletic shoes. Other “toys” for exercise can be acquired such as balls, hoops, and game equipment for group activity.
