Although first-year college instructors are usually very knowledgeable in their subject areas, they're not always shown how to teach. Even new instructors who have been mentored and have audited classes with the intent of learning how to teach really don't know what to expect until they're at the front of their own classroom.
Here are some tips to help new college instructors with their first semester of teaching.
A New Instructor Should be Confident
...or at least come off that way. There's nothing wrong with being nervous, but new students don't need to know a new teacher is either new or nervous. Some of the other tips here will help a new instructor feel a little more sure of herself, but sometimes it comes down to faking it a little until one feels it.
New Teachers Should Over Plan for Each Class
Until one has taught for a few semesters, it's hard to gauge how much material one will need to fill out the entire class period. It's better to over plan – if a new instructor prepares more material for class than he thinks he'll need, he'll be all right. If he truly has over prepared, then any additional material can be used in the next class period. But if not, he'll be glad he had the extra materials to use. It will keep him from fumbling around the classroom with ten minutes to go, wondering uncomfortably how to fill the void.
