Safety is essential when returning to exercise after childbirth. If you didn't do much exercise during your pregnancy it's even more essential to take care. We'd all like to look like the celebrities who seem to return to their pre-baby bodies within weeks; however the reality for most of us is that it will take time for our bodies to recover from childbirth. Exercise is important, as it helps tone up stretched muscles, promotes good circulation and helps with posture.

How Soon can You Start Exercising?

Most obstetricians recommend waiting until your six-week postnatal checkup before trying exercise. Regardless of how easy or difficult your pregnancy was, your joints and ligaments have been put under strain and any rush to begin exercising can cause serious damage. If you feel up to it, walking regularly is a good gentle way to start exercising, and it's something you can do with baby in the pram. Unless otherwise advised, it's not recommended to go swimming in the first six weeks for risk of infection.

When Should You Delay Exercise?

If you experienced back or pelvic pain during pregnancy seek medical advise before starting any exercise.
